Reply with quote | #41 | Great posts! Like everyone here, I'm an INTP (and still trying to forgive myself for being so). I never doubted I could accomplish whatever career I decided upon, it was just making that decision that took so long. I chose law (mostly because medicine required too many prerequisites and that god-awful residency). I enjoy some of the intellectual aspects of law - developing theories and creative arguments, going to different courts and experiencing a change of scenery - the rigid deadlines and procedural rules are maddening and leave me feeling disorganized and drained. The interrupting client phone calls from angry and desperate people are often annoying. I do want out, but can't afford it as I am the sole support of my family. I recommend to any INTP who is considering a career in law to first work in a law firm for 6-12 months or so and really pay attention to the daily grind before committing to the six-figure debt that comes with the education.
Question: Can anyone here think of an alternate career for a medical attorney? I really wouldn't mind my work on a part-time limited basis under my terms (no 3 hour commute, not chained to desk because that's what's done, lots of flexibility) and then also doing something else as well to keep things interesting.
I've considered studying web design and trying to market sites to niche law firms, perhaps with substantive content. Not sure about the time commitment and money that would require, or the market for such services. |

Reply with quote | #42 | Wow! I'm so glad I stumbled upon this website!
I recently had an internship and had to take an internship class along with it. Our professor had us take the Meyers-Briggs to learn about different personalities and how they can affect the workplace. I took it twice and tested as an INTP both times, and both times the T/F were very close (all the others were very clearly one-sided). I really relate to the INTP but found many qualities in the INFP that I could relate to as well.
I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for INTPs not yet in the workforce. I notice some people have been working for a few years and have been bouncing around from job to job or are unsatisfied with their jobs. I'm about to be a senior in college, and I am majoring in English. Since I was young, I have loved to read. English was my best subject in high school and I had some great teachers that encouraged me. I just don't know what I plan on doing with my English degree. I have considered being an editor or publisher, but I'm a little scared of the "corporate" "office" environment that comes along with it. I considered teaching when I was younger, but I'm not sure if I could stand in front of a class and talk for an hour! Also, I'm not exactly organized enough to do that. When I did a project for my class, I considered being a college professor though, just because of the freedom in the classroom and the focus on the intellectual realm of life, rather than the boring office environment. There were a lot of pros, but again the cons of speaking in front of people every day and being organized enough to run a class frighten me.
English teacher, journalist, and writer were all suggested careers for INFPs, but I think I relate more to the INTPs. I don't write creatively, but I really enjoy writing analytical papers for school, arguing a point with evidence from the novel/work of literature. Structuring an argument with evidence appeals to me, so I considered being a lawyer, but like the last poster, I don't think I could handle the bureaucracy involved. My other academic interests are philosophy (probably minoring in this) and psychology, and, less so, sociology, political science, and history. I have considered law or psychology to a degree (I like philosophy, but that's even worse than English ), but English has always been my gut instinct, so I'm following it!
So, what advice would you give an INTP starting the workforce soon? What kind of jobs do you would be good for me? (Challenging and one I would enjoy) What jobs, besides the ones listed (editor, publisher, or teacher), can you think of that I might enjoy? Which one out of the ones I have listed do you think would be best?
Basically any thoughts or insights are appreciated! I loved reading about other people's experiences, thanks all for sharing!

Reply with quote | #43 | Hello... I have tested an INTP with my therapist.... Although, when I took the test in high school I was always almost straight down the middle with I/E... a little more E than I...
I am pretty good about dominating small group discussions... terrible with mingling... and tend to observe people at parties or in crowded places... I love people watching... I can actually see what's inside of people... I can tell things about people just by seeing them... there's this feeling which just tells me things... Sometimes just by talking to them... I quickly know what they're thinking or where they are going with ideas or feeling...
It's pretty fun...
So I am a bilingual speech language pathologist... I typically work with the young 0-3 and what I like most about that is the parent education part of it... I am bored and ready for change... I know that this is not what I am meant to do and for the past 2 years wake up everyday hoping someone will cancel...
I've discovered that I am a teacher at heart and love to solve other people's problems or offer solutions or help them find solutions... I like to give advice and share my opinion...
My husband says that I will get bored of any career change I make because I am insatiable...
Well... i am here because I've been considering a career and business as a life coach... I enjoy the metaphysical sciences, intituition and... well I one of my friends just told me she can't see me as a life coach because I don't always get along with people and well I can't very annoyed and frustrated with people who say they want change/help but don't take the steps necessary to change...
So I guess my question is how do you as an INTP women deal with these issues? Do you feel like an INTP enneagram type 1 would do well and enjoy a career and business in life coaching?
What are the pros and cons specific to our personality for a career in life coaching...
Also... have thought about motivational speaking... which I've realized many life coaches also speak...
I am very passionate when I talk about things I know, love, and understand so I believe I could influence people through speaking ... I just need to be more motivated to take the initiative to just start doing something... jajaj
Thanks,

Reply with quote | #44 | Hi Michele,
I'm learning more about my INTP personality type and it sounds so similar to the other posts.
I'm 28yo, have always been obsessed with music whether listening, collecting, playing and these days using computers to create, modify and experiment with. Even as a small child I'd watch MTV until the early morning. I have a few records that have been released on various record labels around the world (usually 1,000 records for each run - so very small scale). So, to say that I haven't been pursuing my "dreams" isn't true. HOWEVER, this aint payin the bills! Sooo... I have jumped around from job to job (decent jobs) lots of admin, executive assistant, document specialist, account manager for both large corporations and small privately funded companies. I know I DO NOT want to be in an office for the rest of my life. I had studied audio engineering (a vocational school - so no degree) and thought I wanted to record bands for a living but that was a nightmare. Of course, I use the education I received for my own music making but again, it's more a hobby, even though I've toured Europe and frequently perform in clubs in the US.
I feel like I need to get my sh*t together and find a career that I *dont mind* pursuing that will provide me with the money I need for my true love/hobby, MUSIC! If I could have it my way, I'd just sit in my room working on music, everything ranging from experimental noise collages to really commercial advert music and underground rave/club music, even new age ambient music! I love it all.
The thought of making "music" my career or profession scares me to death. I would feel completely empty if my love for music were somehow compromised or became a "chore" or duty that needed to be done. I can completely relate to actors when they say they only want to do movies they have a genuine interest in doing! I get that.
So my question is... what do I do? I have lots of interests; architecture, finance, computer/software engineering. I actually enjoy math. However, the technical aspects of computer/software engineering bore me, but I like the brainstorming aspect, thinking of new ways, designs, interfaces without getting into the nitty gritty stuff. Do I bother going back to school at this point for a 4 year degree? I too am 28 years old and feeling like I'm running out of time.
Thanks again for taking the time to respond, I love reading all the posts here. It calms me to know there are others with the same obstacles, and I know stressing about it wont help things.
